Frank Xarate (Buenaventura, Colombia, 1985) es un artista visual autodidacta que actualmente vive y trabaja en Buenos Aires, Argentina. Su práctica artística está profundamente vinculada a su herencia afroindígena y explora temas como la identidad, la raza, el homoerotismo, la memoria, la magia, los sueños y la construcción de futuros posibles. Para Xarate, el arte se concibe como un espacio de sanación y resistencia, donde la creación abre portales hacia nuevas formas de habitar el mundo.
Su producción se despliega en múltiples lenguajes y soportes —dibujo, pintura, gráfica, medios digitales, poesía visual y cerámica— que se entrelazan para dar forma a universos simbólicos donde lo íntimo se fusiona con lo colectivo. Sus piezas, cargadas de fuerza poética, buscan activar la imaginación y ofrecer miradas alternativas sobre la experiencia del cuerpo, el territorio y la memoria.
Ha sido artista residente en instituciones como la Tom of Finland Foundation (Los Ángeles, EE.UU.) e Itiner Arte (Río de Janeiro, Brasil). Estas experiencias le han permitido expandir su práctica e incorporar nuevos contextos a su investigación artística.
En la actualidad, desarrolla proyectos que entrelazan lo espiritual con lo tecnológico, la raíz afroindígena con la experiencia migrante, y la intimidad con narrativas de futuro. Su trabajo se despliega como una cartografía personal y colectiva en constante transformación, que entiende al arte no solo como expresión estética, sino también como herramienta para sanar, resistir e imaginar nuevas formas de existencia.
Frank Xarate (Buenaventura, Colombia, 1985) is a self-taught visual artist who currently lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His artistic practice is deeply connected to his Afro-Indigenous heritage and explores themes such as identity, race, homoeroticism, memory, magic, dreams, and the construction of possible futures. For Xarate, art is conceived as a space of healing and resistance, where creation opens portals to new ways of inhabiting the world.
His work unfolds across multiple mediums —drawing, painting, printmaking, digital media, visual poetry, and ceramics— which intertwine to shape symbolic universes where the intimate merges with the collective. His pieces, imbued with poetic strength, seek to spark imagination and offer alternative perspectives on the experience of the body, territory, and memory.
He has been an artist-in-residence at institutions such as the Tom of Finland Foundation (Los Angeles, USA) and Itiner Arte (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). These experiences have allowed him to expand his practice and incorporate new contexts into his artistic research.
At present, he is developing projects that intertwine spirituality and technology, Afro-Indigenous roots and migrant experiences, and intimacy with narratives of the future. His work unfolds as a personal and collective cartography in constant transformation, understanding art not only as an aesthetic expression but also as a tool to heal, resist, and imagine new forms of existence.
Como artista visual
Soy un artista visual autodidacta. Concibo al arte como una práctica de sanación y al artista como alguien que abre portales sensibles hacia otras formas de habitar el mundo. Mi proceso creativo parte de lo íntimo, lo afectivo y lo simbólico, y se construye como un diálogo entre cuerpo, memoria, espiritualidad y deseo.
Trabajo desde la mezcla: combino lo ancestral con lo contemporáneo, lo natural con lo artificial, lo matérico con lo digital. Me interesan los cruces, las tensiones y las zonas grises. A través de diversas técnicas —como el dibujo, la cerámica, la gráfica o la experimentación digital— busco imágenes que activen preguntas, recuerdos o sensaciones que no siempre pueden decirse con palabras.
Mi obra se nutre de gestos cotidianos, territorios afectivos y de una imaginación donde los sueños, lo mágico y lo erótico tienen un lugar central. Desde allí, construyo un lenguaje visual que no pretende cerrar sentido, sino abrirlo, dejarlo vibrar, como una forma de resistencia, cuidado y transformación.
As a visual artist
I am a self-taught visual artist. I conceive art as a healing practice and the artist as someone who opens sensitive portals to other ways of inhabiting the world. My creative process begins with the intimate, the affective, and the symbolic, and is constructed as a dialogue between body, memory, spirituality, and desire.
I work through fusion: I combine the ancestral with the contemporary, the natural with the artificial, the material with the digital. I am interested in intersections, tensions, and gray areas. Through various techniques—such as drawing, ceramics, graphics, and digital experimentation—I seek images that trigger questions, memories, or sensations that cannot always be expressed in words.
My work is nourished by everyday gestures, affective territories, and an imagination where dreams, the magical, and the erotic take center stage. From there, I construct a visual language that does not seek to close meaning, but rather to open it, to let it vibrate, as a form of resistance, care, and transformation.e.
